Setting up GPT4ALL-J on Windows

The folks over at Nomic AI have made it very simple to install GPT4ALL locally on your computer. The easiest way to get started is to use one of the CPU installers for one of the following:

  • Windows
  • OSX
  • Linux

In this example we will use the install for Windows that is linked on their GitHub page (GitHub – nomic-ai/gpt4all: gpt4all: an ecosystem of open-source chatbots trained on a massive collections of clean assistant data including code, stories and dialogue)

The first step is to navigate to the GitHub page of Nomic AI to the download section here. Click the link to the Windows installer to start the download. Once this is downloaded, all you have to do is run the installer. It is a very straightforward process.

The install process will ask simple questions like:

  • Where to install
  • Any additional components
  • License agreement
  • Start Menu shortcuts

After this the longest part of the install which will take several minutes or longer depending on the speed of the download which is about 3 GB. Once the download is complete then it has to unpack the components. Finally, the install will be complete.

You should be able to find the shortcut to application on the Start menu. If you do not see it on the start menu then you might try to find it at the following location: C:\Program Files\gpt4all\bin\chat.exe
